England opens Women’s Six Nations defense with 25 World Cup winners and a new captain

LONDON (AP) — Before the 1988 NBA three-point shooting contest, defending champion Larry Bird looked around at his competition and asked, “Which one of you guys is playing for second?”

In the same way,England rules Women's Six Nationsrugby. While England's players would never be so cocky as to say what Bird said they must be tempted sometimes.

England's achievements are awe-inspiring: Won 21 of the 30 championships including the last seven titles. England is on a world record winning run of 33 straight tests, capped by sweeping up the greatestWomen's Rugby World Cuplast September in front of a record sell-out crowd of 82,000 at Twickenham.

John Mitchell, unbeaten in two years as coach, signed on to the next World Cup in 2029 in Australia. Turnover was light after the recent World Cup: Captain Zoe Aldcroft, Abbie Ward, Lark Atkin-Davies and Rosie Galligan are pregnant, Tatyana Heard is out with a foot injury, andEmily ScarrattandAbby Dowretired. Scarratt, the only England player to compete in five World Cups, has moved into Mitchell's coaching staff.

Mitchell declared a clean slate for squad selection but his 32-woman squad includes 25 World Cup winners. The only new cap for their Six Nations opener against Ireland on Saturday is 19-year-old forward Haineala Lutui, the daughter of former Tonga men's captain Aleki Lutui.

The captaincy was given to center Megan Jones, feisty, selfless and with nothing to prove. Jones debuted at 18 against New Zealand in 2015, played in three World Cups, and was the only England woman shortlisted for world's best player of 2025.

On England's unshakeable ability to succeed, Jones said: “We're just highly competitive humans who want to keep winning.”

The eternal bridesmaid to England is France, the runner-up every year since 2020 that suffers from 10-20 minute lapses.

France was the least experienced of the World Cup semifinalists andbowed out to England35-17. The great Gaëlle Mignot, the rare female head coach, was replaced by François Ratier, who took Canada to the 2014 World Cup final and recently guided Stade Bordelais to back-to-back titles in the French championship.

Ratier will debut six against Italy in Grenoble on Saturday. France has the advantage of three home matches, culminating in a hoped-for, last-round title decider against England in Bordeaux on May 17.

Italy, captained again by No. 8 Elisa Giordano, has picked nine France-based players. Coach Fabio Roselli has focused on defense to contain the French backs. The women hope to beat France for the first time on French soil, inspired by their men's first win over England last month.

Dynamo flanker Erin King leads Ireland after missing the World Cup due to a knee injury. King anchors the back row with Aoife Wafer, last year's Six Nations MVP.

Hooker Cliodhna Moloney-MacDonald will mark her 50th Irish cap by also facing her wife for the first time, England wing Claudia Moloney-MacDonald. Ticket sales for the Twickenham match have passed 75,000, ensuring a new Six Nations attendance record.

Wales also hopes to beat its crowd record of 21,186 set against England last year when it hosts Scotland at Principality Stadium on Saturday.

Wales was whitewashed in 2025 for the first time but coach Sean Lynn has had time to bed in, introduced new coaches and nine new caps, and chosen one captain, flanker Kate Williams, one of 12 players from unbeaten Gloucester Hartpury in the English championship.

Scotland beat Wales 38-8en route to the World Cup quarterfinals but from that win stars Fran McGhie (three tries), Evie Gallagher, Sarah Bonar and Lisa Thomson are injured and three others have retired. Teenage flanker Emily Coubrough will debut under new coach Sione Fukofuka, who led the United States at the World Cup.

UCLA Women's Basketball Team Says Donald Trump Hasn't Congratulated Them

UCLA Women’s Basketball team says Donald Trump hasn’t reached out to them

The UCLA women’s basketball team has revealed that Donald Trump has not congratulated them on their NCAA championship victory. The team appeared onJimmy Kimmel Live!on Tuesday, following their win over the South Carolina Gamecocks on April 5.

While speaking with Gabriela Jaquez, Kiki Rice, Angela Dugalic, and Lauren Betts, alongside their head coach Cori Close, host Jimmy Kimmel mentioned that the former President Barack Obama had sent his congratulations to the team, drawing cheers from both the players and the audience.

When Kimmel asked whether the team had heard from the current president, Donald Trump, Rice responded, “We have not.” The late-night host followed up with a quick jab, saying, “I’m sure you know he’s busy,” before adding, “in two weeks you’ll hear from him,” seemingly referring to the recent two-week ceasefire deal with Iran.

Trump had previously congratulated the Michigan and UConn men’s basketball teams for reaching the NCAA finals this year. However, he did not extend similar encouraging remarks to the UCLA and South Carolina women’s teams ahead of their championship game.

Kimmel, who has been in a long-running feud with Trump, went on to bring out a fake trophy and joked that the team should take it to the White House if they get an invite in the future.

“I want you to bring this fake trophy we’ve made,” Kimmel said. “When you bring a trophy, he sometimes takes it and keeps it for himself, so this is for you guys to take to the White House,” he joked, drawing laughter from the team.

The UCLA Bruins women’s basketball team defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks, 79-51, winning the 2026 NCAA championship on April 5, 2026.

Alabama's spring game offers a glimpse of the Tide's next starting QB, Mack or Russell

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama didn't need to turn to the transfer portal or the recruiting trail to find a replacement for potential first-round draft pickTy Simpson.

TheCrimson Tidehad two options waiting for a shot.

Austin Mack and Keelon Russell, the two guysSimpson beat outto start last fall, have spent spring practice vying for the job. Coach Kalen DeBoer has declined to offer much detail on any separation, but the team's annual spring game Saturday could provide a glimpse into the competition.

“Getting a lot of good reps,” DeBoer said. ”I love the aggressiveness that they have. They're not gun shy. They go and make plays, attacking whenever they get the right opportunities with the throws. And they're making the throws."

Replacing Simpson, who threw for3,567 yards and 28 touchdownswhile leading Alabama to theCollege Football Playoff, is one of many offensive changes for the Tide in 2026.

DeBoer and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb are trying to replace eight starters on that side of the ball. The list includes Simpson, four offensive linemen, receiver Germie Bernard, tight end Josh Cuevas and running back Jam Miller.

Alabama also made a change at quarterbacks coach, with tight ends coach Bryan Ellis getting elevated to replace Nick Sheridan, who was hired as offensive coordinator at Michigan State.

ButRyan Coleman-Williamsis back with a new number and should provide a go-to target for whoever ends up taking snaps in the season opener against East Carolina on Sept. 5.

“The guys are coming through, making plays and catches for them," DeBoer said. "I think they’re gaining more confidence in the offensive line each and every day. That’s going to take time; there’s a lot of (new) faces up front. ... They’re clear with their communication. There’s not a lot that’s catching them off guard, so they can go out and let their skills speak for themselves and make the plays.”

Mack, a redshirt junior, followed DeBoer from Washington in 2024. The 6-foot-6 Californian appeared in four games last season, completing 24 of 32 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns.

His most notable appearance came when he filled in for Simpson in a loss to Indiana in the Rose Bowl. Mack completed 11 of 16 passes for 103 yards and led the Tide to its only score in the 38-3 drubbing.

Russell, a redshirt freshman, is the highest-rated recruit to sign with Alabama in the modern era, according to 247 Sports. The 6-foot-3 Texan appeared in two games in 2025 — against Louisiana-Monroe and Eastern Illinois — and completed 11 of 15 passes for 143 yards and two scores.

“One of the biggest things this year was to get smarter,” Russell said during Rose Bowl preparations. “Understanding the offense, just building my confidence level. I feel like I’ve grown, developed and feel like I’m becoming more of an NFL-ready quarterback.”

The Tide would settle for finding a college-ready guy, the next in line at a place that's enjoyed Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, Mac Jones, Bryce Young, Jalen Milroe and Simpson over the last decade.

“Obviously, Keelon is a really, really good athlete,” Grubb said. “I think his feet probably come into play. I think you saw it in the Rose Bowl, obviously Austin can run a little bit. ... It’s not like Austin can’t run, but there is a piece of athleticism there with Keelon that’s different from some guys.

“As far as arm talent, they’re both supremely talented as far as pushing the ball all over the field. There’s not going to be a throw I have in the game plan that I have for one but couldn’t do with the other. Both have quick releases. Accuracy is something they’re both working on. But very similar guys. I don’t think other than Keelon’s feet, there’s a massive difference, other than size.”

NEED TO KNOW

  • The Jonas Brothers musician is kicking off the first weekend of the music festival in Indio, Calif where fellow former Disney Channel kid Sabrina Carpenter is headlining

  • After visiting the festival several times before, Jonas has a few tips up his sleeve

Joe Jonasis back atCoachellathis year and sharing some of his best tips as a veteran to the star-studded festival.

The Jonas Brothersmusician, 36, caught up with PEOPLE on his way to the desert where he hosted a party at the Aperol Day Club on Friday, April 10 — a perk he was not taking for granted.

“I'll be filling my rental up with Aperol spritz,” he tells PEOPLE.

In addition to the refreshing beverage, Jonas says after several trips to the festival in his 20s he knows to stock up on sunscreen, external battery packs and in a surprising twist, he also brought his Xbox.

At Friday’s party, guests were able to get their nails done with Aperol-inspired designs, try a new Aperol frozen treat and even get their own tooth gems.

Ahead of the soirée, Jonas shared that he was thinking about getting his nails done to match his already sparkly purple painted toenails and entertained the possibility of his own tooth gem.

“I've always been hesitant to do it, but I've been going to the dentist quite a bit recently. I feel like my teeth are finally clean enough that if somebody's going to be looking closely and I have a tooth gem, then I wouldn't feel so bad about it being on my tooth. So we'll see. We'll see if they can convince me or if I can convince myself.”

As far as how he intends to spend his time on the grounds, Jonas says there are several acts he looks forward to seeing.

“The lineup's wild. Fantastic. I think it's going to be really great,” he says. “Friday, especially it seems like some amazing artists, everybody fromTurnstile, who I love, the xx,Teddy Swims. Just people that I have definitely overplayed their music on my Spotify, so I'm excited to see them on the stage."

(Jonas ended up popping up during Swims' set to perform the Brothers' song "When You Look Me in the Eyes.")

Also headlining Friday is fellow former Disney Channel kidSabrina Carpenter.

"I do feel quite proud of anyone that kind of comes from the Disney-verse," he says. "It's amazing to see. I'm so happy for her. I think she's crushing it."

With so many artists to see over the three days — and across two weekends — trying to fit them all in might seem overwhelming but for Jonas the key is “trying to do as least movement as possible.”

"I feel like it can get a little chaotic when you're trying to make movements with a group of people. So I think I learned that my advice for those that are going, if it's their first time, if you're comfortable, that's the best place to be," he says. "Don't chase the party. Just, hey, if you're happy in your little area, that's great. Doesn't matter."

Coachella, organized by Goldenvoice, is held in Indio, Calif. on April 10-12 and April 17-19, 2026.
